Brisbane is Australia’s 3rd largest city and the capital of the state of Queensland. It is a cosmopolitan city where almost a third of the population having bring born outside of Australia and strong multi-ethnic culture, as a result, making it a food-lovers paradise. It is a clean and modern city with a warm climate and seemingly perpetual blue skies making it an attractive place to live. It has a thriving arts and cultural scene including the impressive Gallery of Modern Art and the Queensland Museum as well as many varied live music venues. It has some wonderful parks and is renowned as being a green city, a riverside beach and easy access to the Gold Coast. All of these contribute to an outdoor lifestyle all through the year.
Brisbane’s people are affectionately known to both themselves and other Australians as “banana benders” or “cane toads”. The banana bender’s nickname traces its history back to the banana plantations in Queensland whilst the cane toads reference came about as a result of an epidemic of these large amphibians. The fact that they can take a nickname and embrace it perhaps says a lot about what you can expect from Brisbanites.
